The Big Stories of 2026 So Far

This year is busier than 2025 already. Here's what's moving the industry between January and May.

Nintendo Switch 2 Launched in January

Nintendo's hybrid sequel sold 4 million units in the first three weeks. Launch line-up: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Switch 2 Welcome Tour. The chip is custom Nvidia, DLSS supported, 1080p docked / 4K with reconstruction on select titles.

GTA VI Marketing Broke Records

Trailer 2 dropped in February โ€” 350 million views in 48 hours. Rockstar's PR run has been quieter than expected, leaving the community to do the heavy lifting. Take-Two stock hit an all-time high.

Microsoft's Handheld Push

Xbox revealed Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X in March โ€” Asus-built handhelds running a Windows + Xbox shell. Reviews are positive on form factor, mixed on Windows performance overhead.

VCT Expanded

Valorant added a CIS regional league for 2026. The Game Changers circuit got a real prize pool jump (ร—3 vs 2025). LOCK//IN went to Sรฃo Paulo โ€” Sentinels took it 3-2 over FNATIC.

League's Worlds 2026 Location

Riot confirmed Worlds will visit China for the third time โ€” finals at the Beijing National Stadium. Format unchanged from 2025: Swiss group stage, single-elim knockout.

The AI Debate Continues

Microsoft's Muse model (used in Quake research demos in 2024) is now being integrated into mod tools. Voice actor strikes resolved partially in late 2025 but AI replication clauses are the new battleground. Bethesda and EA both publicly committed to "no generative AI in shipped narrative content" through 2027.

Acquisitions and Closures

Embracer continued breaking up its three sub-groups. Tencent quietly increased its Riot ownership. Notable closure: Tango Gameworks (Hi-Fi Rush studio) re-formed under Krafton after its 2024 shutdown.

What to Watch Next

Summer Game Fest in June, GTA VI launch end of May, Xbox Showcase in June, gamescom in August. The second half of 2026 will be defined by GTA's impact โ€” that single launch will move the entire industry's calendar.
